This Week @ MOPS 12.9.14

The last meeting of the semester is always a special with our Tea and Testimony!

The small group leaders decorated the tables beautifully!

Sherry French, one of our own MOPS moms, shared her testimony with us. Sherry has 7 children and 4 grandchildren.  Two of her children were adopted from Uganda.  She challenged us to pray for God to sustain, guide, and direct us.

A few other notes...

As of the beginning of December, we have earned
$688.80!
Thank you to everyone who participated!
Congrats to our top seller, Heather Franchi!

Cold and Flu season is back!  In order to preserve the good health of those in MOPPETS, both moms and workers should be aware of general health concerns and policies.  Please note the following policies, which determine whether or not a child should be in MOPPETS.  If your child has any of the following symptoms and/or illnesses, they should NOT attend:
  • Fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or runny nose in the previous 24 hours
  • Has been receiving antibiotic medication for less than 48 hours
  • A fresh cold with sneezing or requiring frequent nose blowing/wiping
  • A questionable rash (Impetigo, measles, mumps, active chicken pox or conjunctivitis (pink eye))
Please don't be offended if our childcare workers show concern about whether a child should be dropped off or not.  We miss you when you are not here, but we want to keep everyone as healthy as possible!

Many thanks to Kellie Kelbaugh with Thirty One Gifts for sponsoring our meeting!
Kellie was our first speaker this year and has returned to sponsor our meeting. Kellie's Thoughts: "I am a Senior Executive director with thirty one gifts. I joined the company 7 years ago simply to offset my income as a nurse so I could stay home with my daughter Madelyn. God has grown my business in ways I never thought possible.

This Week @ MOPS 11.25.14

This morning one of our very own MOPS moms, Brittani Harnden, shared her experiences with missions and how to include children in missions and everyday outreach.

Through the various missions and outreach she has done both here and abroad, Brittani has enjoyed seeing how kids get to be part of something big God is doing. She encouraged us to help kids be fascinated with God by including them in outreach.

Outreach with children can be done anywhere, not just through Missions. Ideas include praying for those around you, participating in giving activities such as Operation Christmas Child (
children can help pack boxes of food or gifts), handing out candy canes and saying Merry Christmas to people, saying 'thank you' to workers you come in contact with, etc. Whatever you choose to do, have proper expectations and have grace for yourself.

Brittani shared these tips for doing outreach with kids:

Start S.M.A.L.L.
S: Simple activities.

M: Model it. Your kids watch how you do things.
A: Allow kids to help out (even when it's not the most efficient way to handle a task).

L: Love the person in front of you.
L: Learn. Take note of what works and what doesn't work. Be constantly learning.

For additional ideas to spread kindness, Brittani suggests visiting this blog to view "Light 'Em Up 2014- Top 10 Ideas."

Thanks to April for organizing a fun craft!

We made these festive votive holders using decorative washi tape, ribbon, and embellishments.

Many thanks to one of our own MOPS moms Andrea Rollandini Self for sponsoring our meeting!

This Week @ MOPS 11.11.2014

This morning Crossroads member and photographer Shannon Foster-Bradley spoke to use about photographing our children.
Her goal is to capture children's unique personalities to create lasting memories.

A few tips...

Cloudy days are great as far as lighting!

When considering clothing for a photoshoot, let color bring out your personality.  She suggests coordinating colors but not necessarily matching.  Some good combinations are yellow/teal/brown, orange/teal/brown, red/black/grey.

Let them play and have fun, not just poses.

Shannon is offering a special package to MOPS mom on Tuesday, November 18th from 2-4pm and Friday, December 5th from 9-11am.
The sessions will be at the church (outside or inside depending on the weather) and will last 15-20 minutes.  You will get 5 images for $20; the images will be uploaded to a gallery page.

Outside of this special, she has 3 packages:
A: $100 for 10 edited images
B: $125 for 15 edited images
C: $150 for 20 edited images
This includes sitting fees, etc and there are not additional charges per person.
In the gallery, prints can be ordered, and there is an $10 to download for all pictures

This Week @ MOPS 10.28.14

More like last week at MOPS at this point!
Been one of those weeks when I wish I had a few extra arms or a stunt double... just for a few hours!

Our speaker was Tamani Anderson Powell, director of Marketing and Communications for Wake County Public Schools, and she spoke on WCPSS' magnet programs and kindergarten registration.
As a momma of a rising kindergartener, I found it very helpful and hope this post will help for those who were not able to come!
Rising kindergarten parents need to go to your base school to register starting January 15, 2015.
Go here to find out your base: http://www.wcpss.net/parents/student-assignment/

All registration forms for kindergarten can be found here: http://www.wcpss.net/parents/kindergarten/
It's easier to fill them out beforehand, especially if you're juggling kids with you when you go!
You need to bring proof of residence when you go (utility bill, etc) from within 30 days.
You can contact the school ahead of time to find out when exactly the specific school will start registering as some wait until after current students arrive.

If you are happy with your school assignment, no action is required after you register.
If you wish to apply for a change in this assignment, you must participate in an application process.
If you would like to transfer to another school, including a school with a different calendar, request a calendar change online from February 20-26, 2015.  Selection is based on seat availability.

What is taught in all WCPSS schools is the same; what makes Magnet Schools different is how that curriculum is delivered.  Request a magnet school from January 26 - February 5, 2015.

With both of these transfer options, you MUST have registered at your child's base first as you will need their ID number.
There are 3 new elementary magnets this year:
Jefferey's Grove - Spanish immersion (not all K classes and beginning with just K this year)
Stough - Mandarin Chinese immersion (not all K classes and beginning with just K this year)
Hodge Road - Dual Language Spanish
Broughton High School and Daniels Middle School will be remagnetized.

All magnet elementary schools are on traditional calender except for Partnership that is on a modified year round calendar.

The biggest thing I took away from the meeting is the no decline option.  Once a student is selected for a school that school becomes their assigned school.  To attend a different school or return to the base, they must apply during the early or final transfer rounds.

WCPSS offers transportation for all base schools.  Some magnets also offer transportation.  When you look up your base schools it will tell you if you're eligible for this next to the magnet school name.  This could be neighborhood transportation ("normal") or express busing (meet the bus at a satellite location).

Click on the documents Tamani passed out to enlarge for easier reading.
Note in the dates below that the large magnet fair has already happened but there are 2 mini-fairs for rising K families on December 2nd and 9th.

The document below shows the feeder patterns for magnets from elementary to middle to high.
There was one other document she passed out that she did not e-mail me.
It was descriptions of all the different magnet times but you will find all this information at their site:
http://www.wcpss.net/what-we-teach/programs/magnet/

To find out more information about schools, look up individual scores here:
http://www.wcpss.net/school-directory/
Once at the school's page, click on "test results."
Tamani gave a word of caution as to narrative comments on websites such as GreatSchools.net.  The test results are accurate but keep in mind the narratives are written by parents and may not necessarily reflect the entire school.

Yankee Candle Fundraiser

Today we started our Yankee Candle sale to help cover our scholarships and childcare expenses.

Our goal is for every mom to sell 2 items.

Our deadline is November 11th.

All money is collected NOW.  Make checks to Crossroads MOPS.

Items will be here at our December 9th meeting.

If you are not going to be here on that day, please let Kara know.

This Week @ MOPS ~ 10.14.2014

Our Speaker
Our speaker for the morning was Kellie Kelbaugh.  Kellie and her husband’s first child Katelyn Renne had a stroke in the womb but was able to recover.   Tragically she died after a car crash when she was almost 9 months old in January of 2006.  Kellie and Stephen chose to have their precious daughter’s organs donated.  They committed to make their marriage stronger through this tragedy and their faith grew as they tried to understand and trust God’s plan.

Madelyn was born in May 2007 and brought much joy and healing to their house.

Kellie was pregnant again a short time later with a baby boy, Stephen Cole.  In October 2009, after not feeling him move and the doctor unable to find a heartbeat, Kellie delivered Cole at 32 weeks into the hands of Jesus.  In this season of grief she was tested again and learned to take her thoughts of anger captive.  It was a different grief than losing Katelyn as she was the only one who had known Cole.

Shortly after she lost Cole, Kellie was able to meet the little boy who had been given Katelyn’s heart.  She was able to feel her daughter’s heart beating.

By God’s grace, Kellie delivered Ava on Valentine’s Day 2011.

Kellie says she knows without a shadow of doubt that she will see Katelyn and Cole again in Heaven and that she don't have to worry about their salvation.  Through her trials she says she can honestly say that she loves the Lord so much more and is even more thankful the Lord Jesus died for us.  Easter has become even more meaningful as she realized she didn't give her children willingly but God willingly gave Jesus for our sins.  She says she is not a superwoman and didn’t didn't make it through alone.  She relied on Scripture and the stories of Job, Moses, David, Paul and the thorn in his flesh, and Jesus.

It’s difficult to understand why a loving God allows such suffering but He says in John 16:33, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

She shared that in Psalm 22, David felt abandon but chose to obey; there are 4 practical things when can learn:
1. Remind yourself of God's character - list attributes of God.
2. Review God's faithfulness in your life - journal blessings to see how they far outweigh hard things.
3. Recall who you are in Christ and what you were before Him
4. Have patience and know God has a plan.

Kellie relies on God's sovereignty.  Whatever we may face God will work it out in us and bring it under His control.  No matter your trouble, only God can give a divine and powerful comfort that comes from the depths of His character.  Focus on sovereignty and faithfulness we can face any storm and turn ashes into beauty.

Some other verses Kellie mentioned:
 Isaiah 61:1-3
Psalm 46:1
2 Corinthians 1:3-5

Suzanne Weldy shared about a new branch of the Grief Share ministry for those who have experienced miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, still birth, and infant death.  Grief Share is a 13 week Christ centered grief support group/seminar that includes discussion and videos featuring well-known pastors and leaders with years of experience in grief recovery. When a baby is lost through a miscarriage, most mothers (and fathers) need to be given permission to grieve.  Too often, well-meaning individuals minimize the loss - as if, somehow, the fact that the child was never carried to term makes him or her unimportant or far less important.  Yet the grief and sense of loss can be just as strong and prolonged as with the death of an older child or other relative.
Crossroads is able to have like kind loss groups and meets on Thursday nights from 6:30 to 8:30pm in the North Entrance of the church (back side).
For more information go to http://www.crossroads.org/grief.

For our craft, we made these adorable pumpkins from scrapbook paper.
Thanks for all your hard work, Allison!

A few other notes...

This Week @ MOPS ~ 9.23.2014

Our speaker for the morning was Jim Shelton, Crossroads' High School Pastor, on Parenting from the Heart.
"Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it."
Proverbs 22:6

We raise our children according to their personality style as each child and every parenting situation is different.  Pastor Jim referred to Mark Matlock’s Real World Parenting.

Pastor Jim told the story of  Jessie, David’s father.  God worked on David’s heart through Jessie’s parenting as David became a “man after God’s heart.” Samuel 16:13 says “The Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward.”  This is what we all want for our kids... for them to be raised up to follow God!

In shepherding your child’s heart it’s all about…

#1 Mission
Give your child a purpose. Make a family mission – this is what are we here for!

“Stay where you are. Find your own Calcutta. Find the sick, the suffering, and the lonely right there where you are — in your own homes and in your own families, in your workplaces and in your schools.”

-Mother Teresa

A few suggestions he had for family outreach:

Operation Christmas Child
Christian Library International (http://www.christianlibraryinternational.org) – kids could put the stickers on books for this prison ministry.

#2 Guarding Hearts
Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
Proverbs 4:23
“The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?”
Jeremiah 17:9

Susanna Wesley was the mother of 19 children, 10 of which survived.  Susanna made it her practice to spend individual time with each child – to pray with them, to talk with them, and to inspire them!    She also modeled for her children how to have individual time with God; she gave them a pattern to follow as she guarded her own heart.  Two of her sons became incredibly influential men: John was an evangelical preacher and Charles wrote some of the greatest hymns.

The Family Treasurebox object lesson book that Pastor Jim mentioned yesterday for family devotions is no longer available but he did provide this reference for free family devotionals also by Focus on the Family that are found online:
http://www.focusonthefamily.com/parenting/spiritual_growth_for_kids/family_mealtime_devotionals.aspx
These devotionals are excerpted from the book Mealtime Moments; it is currently out of print but appears on other retailer websites as used.

#2 Keep Your Heart Humble To God
He must increase, and I must decrease.”
John 3:30

Our job as parents is to shepherd our child's heart but remember, things do happen. Adam and Eve lived in the perfect environment in the Garden but sin still happened.
We need to trust God moment by moment as He helps us in every situation and trust He is in control.
